I have a shaft rotating under a load and I am trying to simulate the stress that occurs in the shaft when a brake is applied through a coupler using a woodruff key. I have done it 2 ways and am seeing somewhat similar results but I don't know if the 2nd way is accurate.
Left Image: I apply the force (954lb) on the keyway based on a radius (0.524") and the max torque (500in-lb) the brake applies.
Right Image: The second way is applying the 500in-lb torque about the shafts axis, and acting upon the keyway face. When I try to show resultant force, it only gives me one force at the center of the keyway (and almost matches the force when you hand calc it based on the radius & torque). That's the best way I can verify that Solidworks simulation is doing what I think it is doing.
I see differences in the stress along the entire keyway, and I think that is because it is calculating what the appropriate force is at each radius. Is that correct?
