Hi everyone,

I'm a master-student writing my master-thesis about the influence of (welding) residual stresses on the stability of columns under pressure (flexural buckling). For that I have to model sth. in ABAQUS. I want to model a column (simply supported) under pressure and find out the ultimate load. The profile is a welded I-profile. The analysis is geometrically and physically nonlinear (linear elastic-ideal plastic behaviour, steel). Besides i have to put the imperfections constisting of the geometric imperfections (precamber, L/1000) and the structural imperfections (residual stresses). As elements I want to use beam elements (e.g. B31OS). Now my question: How can I define the residual stresses? I have couple of models from the literature showing the residual stresses due to welding. The easiest is simple stress blocks (tension blocks with the yield stress around the weldings, and balancing compression blocks). I know I can use: *INITIAL CONDITIONS, TYPE=STRESS somehow. Can anyone help me or has anyone experience with this? Unfortunately Im totally new in ABAQUS, so my knowledge about it is quite limited.
If someone could help me with the input file or some advices I would be really really thankful :-)

Thanks very much in advance.

Greetz :-) Launeben
