In Section V.8.2.3.1 an equation is provided for the radial load imposed on an end stiffener (V1).

Section V.3.1 (Nomenclature) provides the definition of V1 and states the units are (lb/ft).

In the example (Section V.10.2.16), V1 is computed BUT the Code indicates the units are (lb/in).


So, what are the units of V1 when computed as PsH/48 ??

See Example 16 on P. V-20. There they use that equation and get V1, but V1 is in lb/inches, not lb/ft. This is consistent with the how Q is handled in V.8.2.2.3.

Assuming that the radial load on the entire shell gets transferred into the end stiffeners would give a value of 24 rather than 48 in that equation, being 1/2 and 12"/ft combined. I'm not sure where the other 2 factor comes in. Using shell theory for an unbuckled shell would give a much smaller result.
