API tank erection

I need to write a step by step proceedure for field erection of a 50' diam. API 650 spec. tank. Not a fan of reinventing the wheel, so does anybody have a proceedure I can review and "adapt" to speed the process?

You should repost in the API Code user's forum to get a better response.

However, any quality tank erector should know how to do this and there should be no need to write a detailed spec.

I don't mean to sound disrespectful, but how can you write a detailed (step by step) erection spec and be asking for advice here? I apologize if this is insulting but I would be worried about getting involved in a means and methods for this type of work.

I was am currently working on a project where the owner hired a general contractor to perform a major repair to an API 650 tank and the results were disaster, even the basics were not followed and they had severe weld shrinkage, misaligned plates, peaking, banding, etc. they are now tearing the tank apart again and fixing it correctly with the help of some more experienced tank erectors.

I agree. Get a qualified tank erector. I design tanks for a living and have watched many be erected. A good erection crew is highly skilled team that knows what they are doing from years of experience. Even if you were able to plagurize an erector's procedure, it would not suit another erector whose practices are slightly different.

You guys are both right. However, that does not change the direction of the requirement for a written proceedure. I have been building tanks from ASME SEC. 8 Div. 1 to API5L since God was a boy, I know how and what to do. In fact, I'm almost through with the first draft of the proceedure. My intent was to save time by adapting a set format to my specific requirements. I am still iterested in finding other proceedures to balance against my script. Isn't that what this forum is about??

Yep, I agree with previous post of hiring a qualified contractor.
Having said that one of the more qualified contractors that I know has these proceedures is CBI. If you contacted them, they MIGHT help you with the proceedure end.
Another source might be Tank Industry Consultants, TIC out of Indianapolis. I used to work for a contractor, and it was the devil if they were on one of your jobs, but they are paper work savy. Might not help you due to liablity concerns, but they might do a peer review for strictly quality standpoint if you paid them.
I have worked for neither of these companies, but I did work for a competitor of CBI.
You must be working for a Nuke, to have to write this type of proceedure.

It does seem rather pointless to write a procedure to tell someone how to do what they're already doing.

One problem you have with stuff like this is no two companies do things the same way. So whatever you write up, a tank erector is going to look at it and start adding money for having to do things differently from the norm. The more general and less specific you can make it, the better off you are.
