Going to take my API 653 test, any testing tips been study for 6 months now mostly 653 not the other codes.

1. When you take the close book part of the test is it only over API 653 or it is over 650 651 652 571 etc... I know most likely the open book would be with all the codes. Any advise and what to expect for the test I will appreciate.

There will be about 4ea. Sect IX welding procedure questions, and 4ea. Sect V NDT questions in the open-book. Tab the Sect IX page for SMAW Essential Variables, and the Sect V Appx's for MT and RT. And remember that allowable RT film density for single-view [1 sheet] gamma-ray is 2.0 to 4.0, and X-ray is 1.8 to 4.0.

I'm pretty sure that there is an RT density question on *every* test.

GENERIC: bring either 2-6 sharpened pencils, or a mechanical pencil with either 0.7 or 0.9 lead. Bring a white 'stick'-type eraser -- I prefer Pentel's. Pick a table w/o a partner so you can spread out your books. Never change your initial answer, unless you misread the question or answers. Don't be concerned about the pattern of your answers -- it is not unusual to have 5 of the same answer #'s in a row. [i think I even has 6 consecutive "B"'s in a row]. Just before you turn in your answer sheet, make sure that you have put an answer 'dot' [and only 1 dot] for each question. Watch out on the morning session, there are sometimes more than 50 questions. I missed answering #'s 51 - 54 because i ASSumed that there were only 50 questions.

Thanks for the insight and I am going to take a prep class as well I just been studying hardcore and with the prep class everything will come together. But is the closed book only 653?

No. The closed book will cover any and all specifications listed on the effectivity sheet.

Open book tests are almost always more difficult as the questions generally involve finding specific information in a table or buried in a detail somewhere.

Closed book tests, as a general rule, usually cover more general topics or involve basic calculations. You need to go through the other specifications because questions will be drawn from them as well.

Having said all that, most questions for open and closed book will be from API 650 and 653.

Oh, and this is key, make sure that you complete the entire test. I've taken these tests with guys who inadvertantly didn't answer 4 or 5 questions because they failed to realise that there were test questions on the final page of the test.

Keep your study materials...you will need them for the 6 year on-line renewal. Although the specifications may change, the basic infornation will also help.

Good luck...

Glad to help...Good luck on the test.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.
