Hai Experts,

A)We are Doing Pre insulation pipes for District cooling water lines. We had Bought spiral welded pipes API 5L Grade pipes in that few number of pipes have ovality beyond the limit(30mm). We had discussed with welding shop person they said we can repair by pressing on the edges of the pipe so it correct the ovality.

As Above Answer received from Welding Shop persons. It is allowed to do it? It affect the Weldments and Parent material Properties?

They had Given two more Idea

1. cut the portion of the Ovality Length of pipe. And ask the Customer to Receive by Short length by requesting Deviation.

2. Cut the Ovality portion on the spiral weldments and weld-out the rolled plate by manually. It is accepted?

B) Dents Found on the middle of the pipes it is allowed to hammer after Heating?

Note : Specifications of pipe Below Given.

Size : 1200 mm AND 1000 mm Sch STD( 9.27 mm) Length 12 Mtrs
.

See your design code. There are limitations on what can be repaired. It is your decision, not your welders. If you can't decide, cut out and replace.

Good answer.

Best regards - Al

Why are you even suggesting repairing them ?
If you purchased something that doesn't comply - send it back.

One word DekDee: Schedule.

How are you and your family doing? Merry Christmas.

Best regards - Al

Dear Mr.BigInch,

We are the manufacturer only not designer. From customer we get the specifications it means size and length and grade. We are not possible to send back we received from far.

Please give me the solutions technically to repair it.

Hi Al,
Freezing my you know whats off in China over Xmas.
Fly home to Thailand on 28th for New Year.
Best wishes to you and yours for Xmas and 2017

You and BI have given sound advice on what to do but when did we start offering advice based on presumed "schedules" ?
I do love BI's - "When in doubt, cut it out"!

CREERAAM,
If you can't get the pipe replaced you should be contacting the supplier/manufacturer and firstly telling them they sent you non-compliant items and then asking for recommended repair procedures (in writing).
It is all about CYA when it comes to legal issues.
If the s..t hits the fan with your client after you have done repairs based on what your welding persons told you to do you are in serious trouble.
The other option is contact the client and ask if it is OK to supply shorter sections once you have cut the non-compliant sections out.
Cheers,
Shane

This is very thin pipe so I'm not surprised you have some issues.

If by "pressing" you mean cold forming the pile then that might be acceptable,

The main option to me is to cut out the section of pipe.
Cuting out a piece would probably lead to the pipe springing.

No you can't repair a dent that way. Heating to the extreme that you can hanmer out a dent would lead to changes in material property.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Large diameter API 5L pipes are commonly expanded at the ends to meet the required roundness at the ends for welding. As the pipe manufacturer you should have the capability to do so. When you cannot meet the API requirements, you may also be forced to scrap some of the defective pipe or request deviation from the pipe purchaser.

From your original question and subsequent response as "manufacturer". Are you the manufacturer of the API pipe or are you a piping fabricator?

Dear Mr.weldstan,

Thanks to all for the Reply.

We buy the API 5L pipes from Vendors and Insert the HDPE CASING on OD of the API 5L Pipes and inject the PU Foam That all our work.

We are not designers and Installers of District Cooling Water Lines. We produce the Pre insulated Pipes only in my Shop.

If you have received out of spec pipe from the mill, supplier or from the original purchaser, reject the pipe and send it back to the manufacturer/supplier/purchaser. If your company is responsible for damaging the pipe, either scrap the pipe or ask for deviations to repair from the Owner/Engineer.

creeraam,
The most important thing is photographs of the pipe when it arrived to prove it was not your company that damaged it.
Second most important thing is the client - you should be asking them what do do, not an internet forum.
The decision whether to repair, reject or accept should come from them - not us.
Cheers,
Shane
