I'm working on a fire and gas detection system upgrade for an existing platform.

They have a flare that at one time was was actually flaring gases but due to the heat release and close proximity to the living quarters are now simply using it as a high pressure vent line.

The operators indicate that they often have gas from the vent drift back towards he platform. they are venting methane and I'm guessing the flare is about 30' higher then than the top of the LQ and between 40 - 75' away from the LQ. I don't have any information yet on the release rates or pressures.

I'm not understanding figure D-4 as they don't reference a "Category". Methane would seem to be a "G" and section D.6 would apply. In reality it likely isn't an issue as the distance from the flare to the LQ exceeds the values given in figure D-4. Now I'm just curious for my own reference and to make sure I'm reading it right.

Any help?

Regards
Dan
