Anyone familiar with Eurocode 3? When shall I use elastic shear resistance of a section?

(EC3-1-1, clause 6.2.6, shear resistance)

It is a conservative assumption that shear force is taken by the web only and shear resistance from the flange is ignored. EC3 determines the design shear resistance based on the facts that a section can react either elastically or plastically. My question is: when shall I consider elastic shear resistance of a section? Welded thick plates?

Thanks!

I don't have the code open in front of me. However, if I recall correctly, you would only have to use the elastic resistance for class 4 / slender sections.

Honestly, when you run out the numbers, I think you'll find the two calculations are about the same for I shaped sections.
