I am searching for a numerical method that allows me to determine the fatigue life of a rubber roller due to cyclic loading on the outside diameter that is compressive only. All I can find to date are industry-specific test methods per ASTM or ANSI for example. Thanks for any leads or ideas you may have.

I found one paper submitted in Vertica by Lord Corporation on bearing fatigue. In this application they were measuring bearing spring rate vs time. They found that in order to have a 20% drop in rate that rubber followed:

N=(k/g)^5

N=number of cycles
g=alternating shear strain
k=a material constant. This varies with each elastomer compound, but the paper used a value of 11 for isoprene.

kf9ri,

Can you provide a more specific reference to the paper you are talking about? I performed a Google.com search with the key words: Vertica, Lord, Corporation. Here is the link:

The first result from this search references the following:

I. Chopra, Perspectives in aeromechanical stability of helicopter rotors, Vertica, 14, 4 (1990), pp. 457-508.

Do you know how one can access this particular journal?

Thanks!

kf9ri,

Thank you for the reference, but what is the title for this particular paper?

I could not determine it with a search on Google.

It's an old one -- I will have to dig for it. I don't think it's ever been placed online.
