I need to analyse a U shaped reinforced concrete section for a drainage channel base of which is subjected to uplift pressure and side wall of which is subjected to earth pressure. can anybody give me hint which method suits the best for the analysis.

Hand calculations to confirm you have enough weight to prevent uplift/flotation.

Then 2D analysis of the cross-section you posted, assuming a unit length of channel, eg 1m. Model soil springs as the supports and include weight as well as the loads you sketched.

which software should I use? Will STAAD be enough for the purpose? How to consider Soil Spring Coefiicient?

Hi Ujwal Mandal

Hand calculations don’t need software.

I don't think there's anything sacred about hand calcs. If it's simple enough for hand calcs, it's quick with software. This is a good one to practise on IMO. Not everything is simple enough to do by hand, and you don't want to be learning software analysis on the first complex structure you design. What-if/sensitivity checking (if needed) will be faster when a computer model is available.

Ujwal, there's a staad forum on this site and Bentley also has its own forum. There are also plenty of videos on youtube. Soil springs can also be found online.
