I have an aluminum extrusion part that I designed and I am looking for the industry standard that deals with the following:

surface gouges
surface marks
scratches
dimples
other "dents"

I am looking for a spec. (ASTM?, Mil-spec) that defines the industry standard for the above list for an extrusion process.

Thanks.
Justin

Possibly ASTM B221. I do not have a copy of of it to verify but it is a typical aircraft quality material spec used for Aluminum extrusions.
In case you are not aware, there is at least one supplier of Aluminum extrusions and roll-forms with hundreds of preproduced shapes that might be close to your design. The one I am familiar with is Tiernay Metals at Tiernay.com

ASTM B221 only mentions surface roughness and dents in extruded tubes, and only then references ANSI H35.2M. You will need to devise your own requirements for these items if they are important for your application. The Aluminum Association has a publication that may assist you in identifying and categorizing these defects. Use the following link for more information:

Visual Quality Characteristics of Aluminum Extrusions, 1993 (Reaffirmed, April 2002)
