Allowable surface stress

For a problem i am examining in a hydraulic installation, I am looking for an indication of maximum allowable surface stress (in lubricated and in unlubricated conditions) for the contact between hardened steel pin/bushings.
The problem is adhesion, but also abrasive wear. I assume they are operating at or beyond the limits of what is allowable here, but i am looking for some values for limit stresses to back me up in my conclusion.
My konwledge lacjs here, and internet searches have not been successfull.

A reasonable place to start is the bearing yield or bearing ultimate strengths shown in MIL-HDBK-5 or MMPDS for a variety of heat treated steels. The bearing yield strength can be 300-400 ksi (2050-2750 MPa) for steels quenched and tempered to 50-54 HRC. If this particular contact involves dynamic loading (sliding, rotating, etc.), then these values would not be appropriate.
 
Thanks, I am now looking at a calculated surface stress of 100 MPa in which the contact fails. I already suspected a stong influence of pollution (ingress of abrasives such as mud/sand) to play a big role. This helps.
