Hi,

What would cause Al2(SO4)314(H2O) crystalized in the alum tank and pipes? All input will be appreciated.

Liquid alum freezes at about 5°F (-15°C) and, under certain conditions such as surface evaporation, long-term storage, etc., crystallization may occur near 30°F (-1.1°C).
Storage tanks should be installed indoors or in a heated enclosure. Storage tanks and
equipment located outdoors should be heated with electric heating cable or coils and
insulated to maintain a temperature between 45 and 60°F (7.2 and 15.6°C).

Lines exposed to low temperatures should be insulated. Good engineering practice
provides flush-out connections at strategic points in the piping, particularly in the area of
pumps and metering equipment.
