Are there any rules for properly dealing with the anistropic mechanical properties of aluminum forgings? Data from the books tends to be for properties in the axis of material flow, but what about normal to that axis? Any help anyone could offer would be appreciated.

ASM HANDBOOK Volume 2 Properties and Selection: Nonferrous Alloys and Special-Purpose Materials is one reference that has good information on the properties of aluminum forgings in various directions. You can obtain this from ASM using the following link:

Another great reference is MIL-HDBK-5, which has a ton of data on aluminum alloys (Chapter 3). There is a new revision J, but the older H revision is more easily searched over the internet. Use the following link to access it:

Other references that may be useful to you include the following:

Properties of Aluminum Alloys: Tensile, Creep and Fatigue Data at High and Low Temperatures

Aluminum Forging Design Manual
