AISC 9th Edition ASD

Where in AISC 9th Edition ASD, can I find information regarding the strength of bracing required for a beam to be considered laterally braced. Any help would be appreciated.

Not in there. Have to look in newer Manuals.

Keep in mind that a lot of the research has been done in the last 19 years.

Give it up dude! That green book is outta date.

It is what we use in the office still. We are in IBC 2000 (DC) and IBC 2003 in MD, VA. It's going to really hurt our office when we jump to IBC 2006 in DC soon. My boss doesn't want to mess with LRFD or the modified ASD in the newer manual.

That being said, my building has been designed with ASD '89 manual, because it is still accepted, out of date or not. I guess I'm not held to any particular value based on code. Only in judgement.

Can you point me to where this is in newer codes? Perhaps in AISC 2005, 13th Edition?

Sure. 13th Ed. Appendix 6. There's an Allowable Strength Design way to use this also, which is sorta kinda compatible with 89 ASD.

LOL about the pain of jumping to the 13th Ed. Too bad the office works that way. My first office was like that and the younger guys hated it. My last office used LRFD, so the younger guys there don't even own 89 ASD Manuals or know how to use them. I've done it both ways and frankly don't see the big deal in switching. I'm a steel guy though. If I just wanted to design bldgs and didn't give a rip about steel, I'd probably be less enthusiastic about keeping up with the changes.
