Read AISC 341-5 Table I-8-1 for flexure and compression flanges of rolled W shapes, they are limited to "b/t < 0.30 sqrt(E/Fy)" which for A990 W-shapes is "b/t" < 7.22.

Is there a typo and errata to AISC 341-5 somewhere, and they meant to use AISC's typical Compact Section Criteria "b/2t"?

There are no W-shapes with b/t<7.22 except heavy sections that aren't commercially available [e.g. W12x210 has a b/t = 6.73, but a good solid W10x60 has a b/t = 14.8].

The general definition of "b" when referring to compactness criteria of W-shapes is one half of the flange (that is the unsupported portion off of the web in each side) - so yes they are referring to (b/2)/t when using the general definition of b as the full flange width.

Agree - it's not bf but only b that is in the limit.
