On p. 10-158, under "Unstiffened Seated Connections to HSS", second paragraph, it reads:

"..The minimum HSS thicknesses are established based on the weld strength. If the HSS thickness is less than the minimum value, the weld strength must be reduced proportionately."

I'm not sure what that means. Does it imply that if I selected a 5/16" weld from table 10-6, the thickness of the HSS to which the supporting angle is welded needs to be at least 5/16"? If not, where are the thicknesses "established"?

I believe they're referring you to the tmin equations on page 9-5. In this case, for an unstiffened seated connection, you would compare your wall thickness tdes to tmin = 3.09 D/Fu.

In my mind, a more logical approach would be to calculate a maximum weld size, Dmax, that can be considered for calculation purposes based on the material thickness.

Thanks, nutte.. That makes sense.

At some point I need to just make time to go through the entire manual page by page!
