Your query is far to general. The steel industry is vast in it's make up/demands.

Several refineries in my area use a air oil mist lubricating system for all their offplot pumping systems. Mechanically it works very well and has eliminated many bearing failures. BUT, it is a very messy process. That oil mist escapes and settles on everything creating both a enviromental hazzard and a fire hazzard.
In a steel mill enviroment I would expect the mess to be not acceptable.
Good luck
Ralph

Air oil and oil mist are two different things. Air oil is liquid transported to bearings in minute amounts through divider blocks. Oil mist is oil in 1-3 micron sized droplets in suspension in air. The proportions are 1 part oil and 200,000 parts air. If there is a mess, the oil mist systems is not properly calibrated and are delivering far too much oil. This can be caused but the reclassifier being too large or at too high a pressure. The other possibility is that a collection container is not being used.

Oil mist should be environmentally cleaner than conventional lubrication if properly engineered, installed, operated, and maintained.
