Hi all,

I want to install a vibration sensor (accelerometer?) onto an air condition unit to monitor its vibrations (yes, I'm bored; I basically want an excuse to get some data so I can put my signal processing skills to good use). But since I don't know much about mechanical engineering, I was wondering if you guys can help me out here.

First, what kind of vibrations can I expect? What's the acceleration going to be in terms of g's (gravity)? What about spectrum distribution (highest/lowest freq I can expect to see)?

Second, anyone can recommend a brand+model of accelerometer that might be good for this?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Steven

You'll see the first few harmonics of mains, motor rotational speed and a few harmonics of that, and lots of blade passing frequency and harmonics of that.

Total rms acceleration will probably be less than 20g, that's enough to cause fatigue problems on engines.

B&K make good ones, as do Endevco. You can hire them from places like TechRentals.

Pretty expensive way to relieve boredom!

Cheers
