Dynamic fuel management is also called dynamic skip fire, and it isn't locked to shutting down 4 cylinders at a time. The idea is to spread the load (and heat) between all cylinders, which should avoid some of the headaches.
The newer transmissions with several tall overdrives downspeed the engine more, which has a bigger benefit anyhow. DOD dates back to the 4 speed automatic era.
The idea is fine. It is the way that the lifters are designed that is the failure, and cause about 100% of all problems with the system. They are trying to accomplish the lifter lock with out redesigning the block and lifter size. Yeah my idea GM, contact me before using it.
