I have a small hydraulic flow system in an aerospace application. I need an aeration measurement device to measure entrained and dissolved air in the hydraulic fluid as a function of different operating conditions. I anticipate aeration to be between ~1% and ~10% by volume.

I need help finding a measurement system or device for work in my lab. Can anyone provide recommendations?

How about just measuring the bulk modulus of a sample?

Thanks Mike.

Do you have recommendations for in-line, sample, real time indication of bulk modulus measure. The total fluid volume in the system is only ~1 gallon. I have many different operating conditions I want to test/sample. I do anticipate entrained air to be ~ 1% for some operating conditions.

I thought there was an ASTM test method for bulk modulus.

If you weren't interested in that kind of accuracy, I suppose you could install small hydraulic cylinders at sampling points, equipping each with a sampling valve, a vent/dump valve, a force gauge and a dial indicator.

SAE 982669 describes a setup for doing just what you describe for Automatic Transmission Fluids. You might also look at the test principles behind ASTM D3427 and see if they can be adapted to your setup. For simpler comparison purposes you might want to consider in-line densitometry which may correllate to air entrainment closely enough for the comparison you're interested in.
