I'm working in a research center dedicated to material testing. We study both massive and coating/substrate systems. Coatings thickness range from 200 nm to 5 micrometers, and the systems can be soft on hard, polymers on metals, metals on metals, polymers on glass, etc. Idem for the massive samples (soft/hard polymers, metals, glasses).
We are looking for a tribotester :
- from Fn = mN up to 20 N (roughly) ;
- able to do tribocorrosion.
The 3 suppliers I retain up to now are CETR, CSM and Tribotechnics. The differences in these device are quiet important, and as usuall, each supplier says to be the best !
I would like to have an objective advice from this communauty, especially on the following points if possible :
- regarding the normal force, what is the best, and why : a sensor allowing a continuous range of force, or a dead weight system ? The former should be less precise as it needs to be controlled (servo-controlled), but the latter is more "rigid" because it allows only specific normal forces.
- the versatility of CETR is seducing. But I think that when you can do several things, usually you do them with less efficicency than if you are specialized in one thing. Do you know if CETR UMT-2 is really able to apply 1 mN for sure, and at the next test, 200 N for sure ?
- can you please give me a feeling about our device : for you, what are the pro's and con's based on your experience with our equipment ?
