in my study of pulse detonation engine theory, i had not encountered this term. after reading your post i have done a little research and discovered they go hand in hand. adiabatic compression is defined by: external work on a gas that releases internal energy and raises its temperature without the addition of heat. detonation is essentially sustained supersonic combustion in the form of a detonation wave. a detonation wave is made up of a shock wave front (supersonic wave) followed closely by a reaction (which feeds the shock). the detonation wave creates adiabatic compression, which creates the driving combustion. i'm also assuming that it works the other way. that is using adiabatic compression to create a detonation. although my readings lead my to believe that true detonation is generally created by ddt (deflagration to detonation transition) or a high energy spark. i would be very interested in anyones addition/correction to my post.
