I am trying to find information on steel-steel adhesives. Right now, I'm fairly out of my depth so any insight I can get would help.

We currently use a one part heat curing epoxy to hold bearing halves together so that we can machine them to match. While this mostly works, we also get distortion in the parts when they are de-bonded. As I know basically nothing about adhesives, where would I look for more information? Would anyone have advice on where to learn more about different types of adhesives to even have an overview of what I'm dealing with?

I'm sure this is a huge topic and people make their lives on just this alone, but I'm somewhat out of my league with this and looking for a place to start.

Ciba-Geigy used to have have some pretty good general technical brochures on their web site.

But it seems that they've been bought and sold multiple times, and I can't follow the trail to who might own them now.
 
If memory serves you may be able to phone your local loctite office too - or even get a rep to visit you.

I think Bulldog PL Premium can be used steel to steel; check their website.

I've used PL Premium for gluing wood to steel for reinforcing floor joists using steel BAR.

Your distortion is likely coming as a result of the machining process, and your choice of adhesives may not have anything to do with that.
 
That is very true. This is just one of the many avenues that we are currently pursuing.

It is my theory that inconsistencies in our bonding process cause variations of part behavior during the machining. Sometimes we get good parts with no distortion at all, sometimes we get whole lots of bad parts. Not to mention the emotions involved in this project and all the tribal knowledge that has no data to support it.

Are you finishing the OD and ID while bonded? I assume the steel is the backing material. How thick is the (steel) backing? What is the bearing material and how is it applied? Is the shaft diameter less than 3 inches? Could you subsitute Chevy, Ford, Olds or Pontiac main bearing inserts ?
 
We are finishing both IDs and ODs. I believe for most parts the process is Bond- OD- Track- Bore. Pretty much all the parts are M50 steel. Shaft diameter ranges, some real small, some fairly large. Most problem parts are in the 4-6" range.
