Adding text as a cut.

Can someone tell me if it is possible to add text as a cut into the edge of a disc. this would allow me to add serial number to the disc on its outer surface. I dont want to just add it as a cosmetic i would like to actually have the text in the model. If it not possible as a cut is there another way to do it? thanks .
