Greetings all!

It must be the most stupid question to date, but I can't understand how to add multi-select rule to the toolbars either in NX8.5 or in NX9.0 with it's ribbon interface... Please help!

For NX 8.5, just select the little Arrowhead at the far right end of the 'Selection Bar', as indicated below, and you'll be able to add and remove items to the 'Selection Bar':

BTW, it's basically the same in NX 9.0:

Thank you very much, John! Some time ago I was shown how to do this, but then I firmly forgot it!

And while we are at it - what does 'Up one level' button do?

The "up one level" has to do with groups. If you select an entity that is a member of a group, you can then use the 'up one level' option to select the entire group.

For example, in modeling, use the 'clip work section' command to section your model and use the 'save copy of section curves' to create curves on the section cut (the default behavior is to add all of these curves to a new group). Start the delete command and select one of the section curves; now choose 'up one level' to select all the section curves at once.

The 'Up One Level' selection function has a couple of handy useages. For example, let's say you have a large Assembly open with lots of sub-assemblies and you wanted to select all of the components of a sub-assembly. Granted, you could go to the Assembly Navigator and find the sub-assembly there and select it that way, but you could also just select one of the Components in the sub-assembly and then hit the 'Up One Level' icon and it force the selection of the full sub-assembly. And if that sub-assembly was part of another sub-assembly, hitting the 'Up One Level' icon a second time would now select that sub-assembly as well.

The second most common situation is that you might have a group of objects, like say points that were Imported into NX using the new (in NX 8.5) File -> Import -> Points from File... where you can create a set of points, whose coordinates were read from a text file, and they come in as a named group. Well if you wanted to select the entire group, you could just pick one of the points and then hit the 'Up One Level' icon to pick the entire group of points.

Anyway, this function has been around for years but most people never really learned what it was used for, but now you know...

And please forgive me for going off-topic, but once I saw a thread here where John (or so I believe) gave a good breakdown of different tools for Excel spreadsheet integration available in NX. Could not find it again! If you know what I'm talking about, please give me a link! Thanks!

There have been so many threads in the last year or so covering various ways to link NX to a spreadsheet that it would be hard to give you even a couple of definitive links. Your best bet is to simply do a search on the term 'spreadsheet' or 'Excel' and ask that the results be sorted by Date - Latest First.

I tried the 'up one level' function and found a thing which seems strange to me. If I make a selection of a group memeber in the graphic display or in the part navigator, up one level command does not select all member of a group. It does that only if I exlicitly select this same member in the group list in upper part of a part navigator. Is this as designed?

Using NX 9.0.3.4, it works fine for me. I selected a member of a group from the screen using the cursor and when I hit the 'Up One Level' icon it selected the entire group.

What version of NX are you running?

I'm on the latest versions available: NX8.5.5.3 MP6 and NX9.0.2.5 MP1. Well, this is the first time I tried this function, and it may be I did something wrong. How is it supposed to work?

I just tested this using NX 8.5.3.3, again with a group of points imported in NX using the 'Points from a File' function, which creates a named Group of points, and the 'Up One Level' behaved just as I've described.

Interesting. I'll give it a try again and then get back to you.
