Is there a way to do this and be able to name the part yourself at insertion? Perhaps even have a "prefix" added to the actual file name automatically?? That's even better.

I've been prowling the internet and help files for a pathway to something like this, with no luck.

Using "Make Unique" after insertion is getting old and I don't want to use part families, it's to restrictive.
My parts have to many options to make that practical.

What I need is to be able to preserve my library parts in one place so multiple people can use them.
We can't do that right now. With the method I'm using, if you forget to "Make Unique" before modifying it, the original part in the library part is then messed up.

TIA

Dave and Toost --

There's not a great way to subdivide the "Primary Parameters" section, if that's what you're asking WRT #1.

Of course, Product Template Studio (PTS) was created for this very purpose -- for when the simple, automatic dialogs for Reusable Components are just not enough. With PTS, you have full control over the layout, grouping, etc. of entries in the dialog, in addition to a lot more useful functionality for template-based parts and assemblies.

Just a thought. ;-)

Dave --

Toost is right here... For these screws, the spreadsheets are embedded inside the part family master ("parent") files, and you can certainly view them there. (Inside your NX installation, look in "\nxparts\Reuse Library\Reuse Examples\Standard Parts\ANSI Metric\Bolt\Hex Head", for instance.)

In a Part Family spreadsheet, each line describes one valid combination, and the Reusable Component dialog will automatically adjust the option menus to ensure that the combination of parameters is a valid one -- particularly during the mismatches along the upper [blue] or lower [red] edges of parameter ranges.

For your springs, if you're NOT planning to use Part Families, then you can still use an external spreadsheet to define the options, like the beam examples inside your NX installation at "\nxparts\Reuse Library\Reuse Examples\Standard Parts\JIS\Profile", for example. You'll notice that the spreadsheet here can [optionally] be a bit more sparse, particularly over in the "LENGTH" column:

You'll notice that there are actually some interesting formatting/consolidation options available here, if you poke around the Reusable Object examples. (Like in the rib examples here: "\nxparts\Reuse Library\Reusable Object Library\Metric\Rib"):

Does that help?

Thanks Taylor,
I've got some of that formatting down. See attached for how the spring is being achieved at this point. This works.

I've had to leave the Length field a manual input so I can put it to use right away.

But here is a failed format I tried similar to the fastener example you gave. THis is my effort to get the length column to nest off of the wire diameter column.

I also tried filling in all the diameter fields. That failed too. It hangs up at the Wire diameter field in the dialogue.
Gives me a looooong number with a -2 on the end... or something like that.
I really thought this would work because I got the idea from a system spread sheet.

Any ideas on what I'm not getting right?

I did get eventually get this figured out.

[Now, howabout this one...
I've got a spring that has 3 inputs.
1. Diameter
2. Wire Diameter
3. Length

The list of available lengths needs to change up depending on selection the combo of #1 & 2]

Answer:
You need to enter every possible combination as a separate line. Then the fields will sort availability progressively as you move from selection field 1 thru 3.
I was being lazy and trying to have spreadsheet columns 2 or 3 format with multi selection (X1,X2,X3,X4) etc... You can't do that when you need progressive sorting.

@ Toost
You had already said that. Kudos, I'm just a little slow!

After having converted my library over I re-organized the folder structure. Then changed all the paths in Cust Defaults, Gateway, Reuse Library, General, Feild: "Organized by native folder"

But when I first start up NX and attempt to edit or insert any reuse parts I get a bunch of Information messages.

Search Directories
C:\blah\blah: "Invalid path name"

After issuing these messages NX reuse works fine, but it's annoying. How do you clear it? As stated above, the paths in that location are all adjusted and correct.
There doesn't appear to be anything buried in the KRX files so I'm lost.

TIA for any help on this one

Start a new NX session and confirm the error messages. Then go Help - NX logfile.
the error messages should be printed in there too, with more information on what NX considers being wrong.
If i guess , it's a typing error,
- copy the printed path from the logfile and paste into the address field of a Windows explorer, if that works, the address is (should be) correct.
( This is how I test if a path is correct or not.)

Tomas
