Add a thin cut...

Hi,

I need to detail a thin cut in a joint/gasket, a dovetail shape. Any ideas?

Are you talking about detailing on the drawing?

How about a detail view of the cut at a larger scale?

Hi,

I'm actually after showing the split in a part model. It really is just a knife cut in a ___\¯¯¯/___ shape (though the shape isn't too important) It's more to do with having a ring of gasket for a flange that has the cut in it. No material is lost/removed when cut so I guess it's slightly difficult to display in a part model due to the edges being close to one another?

How about adding a sketch? This would allow you to show something in a drawing but withouth actually changine model geometry.

Alternatively just put a very thin cut?

I'm not sure I fully understand what you're doing, I'm probably being dumb.

Thanks KENAT for your time!

The easiest way to explain what I need is if you take a piece of card and cut a line from the centre all the way to the outer edge. What this leaves you with is a cut where no material has been removed but to that solid there are two extra faces that are now touching. The fact that the two faces are now touching is important to me.

then you could use 'SplitFace' function. First put a parallel
plane where you would like to split then use the function.

To have the cut as part of the solid, some material will have to be removed.
As Kenat suggests :
You could do this with a cut feature that is thinner than your normal tolerances would show. For example if you would normally detail to 0.01mm then make the cut 0.001 wide.
Alternatively, use a sketch or even a surface that you can then show in the drawing.
We would normally just draw it in the view on the drawing.

I like to show all details on the model, expecially for this one as it's going to be a family of parts, so getting it right the first time so it's available for all sizes is quite important. (will be using variables etc to create the cut line)

Thank you for your help, I guess I'll have to settle for the cutout. Personally I think that Solid Edge should be able to do what I'm asking as we do have another instance that requires the same problem, but this time on a split o-cord.

Hi,

also possible (cylinder assumed):

- create a parallel plane by using one of the faces
- on that plane create sketch by including the
cylinder
- use the function 'Bounded surface' and select the sketch

Now you have a 'split' without a cut. In draft you will
have to activate 'Show constructions' to see the split.

An additional option maybe the PartingSurface command. With
both function you will still have one part and the parting
line is of cosmetic nature only

but you can make a very small (rotaty)cut i.e. 0.0001 mm (0.0000039")
wide or deep or both is absolutely possible when necessary.
