I have read that acoustic emission monitoring can be used to characterize the Kaiser effect in ceramics under strain.

We would like to monitor sealed housings made of silicone carbide. We will hydrostatically test them to extreme pressures, to destruction, and characterize the acoustic properties. the goal is having predictive data and hence warning before a catastrophic housing failure of a housing that is in service.

We are just getting into this; does anyone know what types of sensors could be used? Any refrences would be greatly appreciated. Not sure whether the sensor would need to be mounted directly to the housings, or could "listen" thru the pressure pot.

any input greatly appreciated!

Contact Physical Acoustics Corp. This looks like an AE application that is easy to do. You can use a wideband AE sensor type WD or sensors such as their R6 or R15.
