Abrasive material

We are looking for a material that is very abrasion resistant against fine high speed airborne metal particulate material. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you sure you want a polymer for this? Would a ceramic or cermet do?

It needs to be flexible n this application as it really works as a liner for a collection system. Once the process is complete, the liner is disposed of.

Hi Distracted,

One of the most abrasion resistant polymers is polyurethane - especially cast (cross-linked) versions. Whether it will be sufficient or not remains to be trialled!! (it's usually available in stock sheet (slab) form and machining is usually done by water-jet cutting as it's vitually impossible to machine otherwise, due to it's high tear strength. There are also the injection mouldable polyester elastomers such as Hytrel (Du Pont) and Arnitel (DSM) et.al. They also can be quite good but not as good as PU - a lot depends on application.

If the air speed is really high and also carrying metal particles there is no doubt severe abrasion is likely. Using PU and for that matter just about any elastomer or plastic will not work unless it is acceptable to have frequent change-outs. PU or natural rubber are probably your best bet if its a one shot throw away application otherwise take the advice of btrueblood and go ceramic.
