AAS in Drafting and AAS in Mechanical engineering

what kind of doors would an AAS in Mechanical engineering open up or provide

Depends on the particular job you are applying for.

For example, if you have an AS in engineering, but you also are proficient at doing class A quality auto body surfacing in CATIA V5, you can easily get contract work that pays $75 to $100 per hour. But if you have an AS in facility planning, you will be lucky to get a job paying $30K.

Any doors that open for you will be due to demand for skills that you have. Forget everything that your college advisers told you about career opportunities. Instead, learn a specific skill that is difficult to master, like class A auto body surfacing.

It should get you into an engineering laboratory, building prototypes and taking data and such. Most likely the wrenches and the workpieces will be relatively clean, and you won't usually have to work in mud or freezing rain.

Or, it could be a stepping stone to something else. Nobody knows what, so work hard, learn all you can about _everything_, pay attention, and watch where you step.

If something opens up in a machinist's intern or operator, it would be good training.
Any 3D CAD modeling experience is required anymore.

It would certainly be worth it. I started out as an AAS, and after 2 years in my first job, I was able to go to University for 3 years full-time to get my BS. I didn't have to borrow money from anyone, I paid all my tuition and books myself.

I wouldn't be as sanguine about an AAS, given the large number of currently unemployed engineers. In any head to head comparison, an AAS will generally lose out over a BS.

Not necessarily true, IRStuff. The BS'ers are often viewed as overqualified and overpriced.

Regarding BS'ers, I was taught in the military that the ability to BS was essential to career growth. )

Anyhoo...

I'd get the AAS in ME. IF you can do the ME, you ought to be able to qualify as a drafter. Sooner or later you'll likely grow weary of being an AAS and want to move onward and upward. Starting down the ME path will get you a better boost toward later qualifications.
