If welding a588 that is going to be exposed, bare weathered, multi pass groove with E8XTX A5.29 filler metal for atmosheric corrosion and weathering characteristics, can this be done with a pre-qualified wps?

A558 is a group II material, therefore can you write a wps just for A588 welded with 80 series filler or would you have to produce a pqr?

Table 4.5 PQR essential variable changes - filler metal 1) Increase in filler metal classification strength. But, Table 3.1, A588 with note b Special welding material and WPS(e.g. E80XX-X low alloy electrodes) may be required ect. ect.

So does that mean that you can write a WPS prequalified to meet the requirement, or does a PQR need to be performed, I'm a little stumped...

Thanks for advice/comments,
Robert

AWS does not offer any SWPS's for any E80XX-X filler metals. And as you noted filler metal is an essential variable. I would think that 80 series filler is common enough that tests reports and WPS's are available. But, I also think the PQR tests are required to develop at WPS.

Thank you Connecteqr...

Can someone move this post there rather than I be double posting?

Thanks,
QCRobert

connecteqr,

Table 3.1 Prequalified Base Metals-Filler Metal Combinations list in Group III 80 series electrodes.

I agree that 80 series electrodes are prequalified, just like 70 series. But a WPS is also required with the use of 70 series electrodes. The process for developing a WPS is the same. A SWPS provides the standard welding procedures with the testing verified by AWS. But, none are provided for the 80 series and carbon steel. So, I think you have to develop a WPS with PQR testing.

I took you advice and posted on the AWS welding code issues category.
