We have some 1970 era drawings at my jobsite that reference A553 Grade B or A325 type 2 material for shims. Has A325 always been a bolt specification? or was it something else at one time?
Thanks in advance

To my knowledge, A325 has always been a bolt specification, and I've been in practice since 1976.

It's been a bolt spec as long as I remember, and I was working before we had high strength bolts. In any case, I can't imagine the ASTM re-using old numbers.

Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

Thanks for the replies. I looked back as far as ASTM 325-71 and it is still for high strength bolts.

Just a guess... Could they be A325 washers used as shims?

Washers are under another spec.

Chances are, someone back then made a bad assumption about what material to call out or simply didn't know better.
To my knowledge A553 is pressure vessel plate and has types I & II.
I have only ever seen it on power plant jobs and it was never in the scope of my work.
Its almost like someone just made a willy-nilly note on the dwgs.
Is this for structural steel?

A553 was the other material option that was called out along with the A325. I think you've got it right Toad, someone just made a "WillyNilly" note.
