Hi
I have a related query to my post "Noise and Vibration in Vertical Milling Cutters". What is the best location/method to measure the milling cutter vibration?

- Is it through an accelerometer on the spindle bearing which houses the cutter spindle?
or some other mechanism such capactive probes, laser etc.?

I believe torsional vibration would be difficult to measure using these methods. Does torsional vibration also play an important role in radiating noise?

Thanks

I have done some machine tool vibration monitoring both for condition monitoring and for tool condition. For cutting tool condition I have attached the sensor on the spindle and on the fixture for the machined piece, with good success, but your success can depend on various things like the path the vibration must travel to the sensor, natural frequencies of the various components, damping, etc.

Torsional vibration measurement could not be monitored with a standard vibration sensor like an accelerometer, but it is possible to measure torsional with some additional instrumentation. Sometimes "normal" vibration is a by-product of torsional vibration. Torsional vibration has been shown to be very influential in radiated sound from drive train components on trucks and busses. I would guess that it could also be influential on radiated noise from a milling machine. Maybe a good Google search, or trying the Global "engineering" search engine could turn up something on torsional vibration with regard to machine tools.
