A-Frame Deflection Calc? 1

I have a simple A-Frame model. One plumb pile connected at the top to one spur (batter) pile. They are 12" diameter timber piles. I apply a lateral load at the connection point. I am trying to calculate the deflection (translation) of the top of those piles in the horizaontal direction. Please let me know if you have any ideas or know of any methods that can show me how to do this in a hand calculation. Thank you.

If a pile, it is embedded in the ground, that has a say. Prior to having computers more likely one would have searched for a chart for a pile embedded on the ground with some horizontal load, to give directly your answer for some kind of soil.

I would assume that both piles are loaded axially and that the battered pile takes all of the horizontal force. The horizontal deflection of the top of piles is the horizontal component of the battered pile's angular settlement.

I agree with BAretired. If the timbers are long, it might be worth while to add the reduction in length due to axial strain. However, unless the piles are set on rock; the controlling factor will be the settlement. Remember that the settlement is a function of time. If the live load is only applied for a short duration of time, you will not get much settlement.

I would not worry about lateral loading due to the rafters of the A frame when the floor joists will prevent the rafters from spreading.

I see the only lateral from wind or seismic here. How far do the piles cantilever above the finish grade? Is this in a flood zone?
