600V molded case circuit breakers for use on 208V circuits

We have an existing 600V panel, 3-phase power panel operating at 480Y/277V that we want to convert for use at 208Y/120V. We realize we have to change out the breakers to larger amperage but I wondered if there is a Code reason or any other that may not make this good idea?

Have you checked the cost of new 600V breakers against the cost of a new 250V class panel c/w 250V breakers?
Don't forget to check availability. I have had to use more expensive 600V breakers on 208V service when cheaper 250V breakers were not immediately available.

I don't see an issue as long as the short circuit rating is within available SCC at the lower voltage.

Even if you were to reuse the breakers at lowe voltage, watchout for their short circuit rating at lower voltage and verify that they meet the SCCR at the usage voltage.

Make sure labling very clearly states system voltage.

To expand on what Bill said, regardless of the voltage buying separate breakers is much more expensive than buying a new panelboard with new breakers. (in the US).
