440C SST Magnetic Strength

Hi,

I'm trying to redesign and replace bunch of locating pins which currently are made of O2 Steel with 440C SST ones to avoid corrosion, Pins must be magnetic, wonder if anybody ever compared these two materials magnetic strength? Any idea in case 440C is less magnetic? How much?

Since neither of these is considered an alloy where magnetism is an important property, you will find very little data. Also, it will very a lot batch to batch. However I can assure you that 440C is quite magnetic.

I agree with dgallup, magnetic performance isn't a controlled property when in comes to tool steels nor stainless steels.

Having said that, the 440C will be slightly less magnetic than the tool steel only because of the Chromium content.

440C has 17-18%Cr, you will see 20% less saturate magnetic induction if only considering the dilute effect, due to other effect, you could actually see >30% less induction. permeability wise, petty much same, but hard to say for sure. It depends on process heavily as being pointed out.

 

I am going to be pedantic here and state that the applicable term for this material property is ferromagnetic.
