42CRMO4V treatments

Hi there,

I am looking for a high strength steel to make a shaft and some holding plates.

We can get 42CRMO4V, which seems to have very good properties, but it has to be heat treated.

I've never done this before, so I would like how to proceed.

If I find somebody to do the heat process, will the dimensions be changed? I have specified tight tolerances in some sections

Will it be better to find another material?

I found a supplier with the following material:
42CrMoS4+QT

So the bar is already quenched and tempered

I'm confused.

Isn't the steel treated after the parts are machined?

There are usually two ways to do this.
1. Rough machine, HT, finish machine
2. HT, machine. Yes this takes hard tooling and very rigid machines but it is common.

so if I buy the material quenched and tempered it will be harder to machine but I will have the properties in the table
