4 vs. 6 lead wire stepper

I have a stepper motor controller / driver for bipolar stepper motors. It has 4 leads on the end of the motor connector. Can I use this driver with a 6-lead stepper motor (given that I get A and B wired correctly)? The application requires fairly accurate positioning +/- a couple of steps. Are there any accuracy problems I would run into? Thanks for helping out.
