301 Stainless for use in ASME Pressure Vessel

Hoping one of you could help me out. I want to make a pressure vessel component out of stainless, and need to make sure it is ASME compliant. I was looking at the list of stainless steels covered by an SA or A spec in the ASME BPVC Section VIII, and it seems to exclude 301 (UNS#S301000, EN# X10CrNi18-8) (and 302 and 303 S.S for that matter). I mostly see specs for 304 and 316, which makes sense because they are more abundant.

My questions are:
1) Is there a spec for 301 that I can use? Am I overlooking it.
2) If there is no spec, then I seem to recall an ASME approval process for non-standard materials. Could you briefly describe the approval process?? Additionally, if someone has gone through the process, can you give me a sense of whether it would be worth the trouble?? I will probably give in, and just use an established spec, rather than go through a tedious approval process.

Any recommendations or alternative approaches are welcome.

If you have a copy of ASME B&PV Code, Section II, Part D and the material is non-listed or there is no Code Case for the material, you are correct, the material is not acceptable for use as pressure-retaining material.

If you want to develop a submittal for a Code Case for use of this material, you need to follow the requirements for the respective Code book section for submittal of Code Cases. You can locate this information under a Mandatory Appendix titled SUBMITTAL OF TECHNICAL INQUIRIES TO THE BOILER AND PRESSURE VESSEL COMMITTEE — MANDATORY

All of the information is there for what you need to do for a Code Case.

Is it worth it? It all depends on your business needs because it will require time and data submittals to the committee. How do I know this - I sit on an ASME B&PV Code standards committee and see these all the time.
