I am in need of heat treatment advise for 300M stub axles for a high performance car.

Can anyone tell me what kind of heat treatment these will require, the hardness and whether different area's on the stub axle need different heat treatment and hardnesses ie splines, flange, shaft, etc.

Any help will be appeciated.

Thanks

Colin

One suggestion is to start by normalizing the material, followed by a quench and temper to 45HRC, then induction hardening the splines, shaft body, and any rolling contact surfaces to 55HRC. You may be able to use this material without induction hardening though. Be careful in transition areas, you may want to check for cracks using mag particle.

Standard heat treatment for 300M is to austenitize at 1600F in neutral atmosphere or salt and oil quench. Temper at 600F. Hardness will be in the high Rockwell C 40's to low Rockwell C 50's.
