3-D machines

Seek advise on an NC machine to take 3-D CAD output and produce an object whose visible surface matches that of the CAD object. Desired output max size: h = 45 cm, w = 30 cm (smaller could be OK to begin). Should be capable of thin (i.e. around 1-2 mm). Example: coffee cup made from wood

As an EE I am untutored here. How do I specify such a thing.

As an alternative to milling from a solid block of material, there are technologies for &quot;printing&quot; a 3D part. Do a web search on the terms STEREOLITHOGRAPHY or SELECTIVE LASER SINTERING. These technologies can produce a 3D part of various plastic resins, or even solid metal if laser sintering is used. There is a magazine devoted to these types of technologies called Time Compression Technology.
