What is the use of the 2D grid in Catia V6 (3DEXPERIENCE)?

How could it be checked/unchecked?

I'm not sure if there's a better way to do this, but if you right click on the background and look under "Ambience" there are multiple options that don't have the grid (at least on my company's setup). As far as it's purpose, I haven't figured that out beyond just helping to show the user the orientation of the view.

You can avoid only if you will modify Overload Ambience, at least I couldn't find another way, except that changing the Ambience as already was mentioned before.
