All,

All the experts there, has anyone come across with installing 260kv cables buried underground? I am looking at an application where we possibly need to bury cables for a distance of 1.5km.

Few vendors offer 345kv cables suitable for direct burial, can someone help me answer the following:

1. Any restrictions?
2. Any splicing issue after every 800m?
3. Are there any standards that we can follow?
4. any installation that might have been done in north America?
5. How are the splices done?

Any information or references will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bpn

Just to clarify, you are not looking for conduit or utility trench applications. That is a much smaller field. Per a presentation by Bill Hansen at the 2005 POWER Line Conference, the companies below have 345 kV HPFF (high pressure fluid filled) cables if that would work for you.

Consolidated Edison
Keyspan ( Long Island Lighting Company)
Public Service Electric & Gas
NSTAR
Commonwealth Edison Co.
Detroit Edison
Dunquesne Light Company.

At that time there was also approximately 200 km of XLPE cable 345 kV and above outside the USA.

You might want to speak to Prysmian (ex-Pirelli), Brugg, Nexans and Taihan. All have a fair amount of experience at these voltage levels (and did have in 2005). Is 200km a typo? [smile]

If we learn from our mistakes I'm getting a great education!

Oh, it was circuit length instead of cable length, and it is possible the presenter had some caveats I didn't get down in my notes. The EVH XPLE cable length was a fraction of the fluid filed EVH lengths.

Looks like the first US installation was Mystic plant per page 10 of
