Yesterday I encountered some existing 32' long joists with hat channel chords. The joist tags I collected read as stated in the subject "24HL4 C 482" and "24HL5 A(or N) L482". I assume the 482 is the job designation. The width of the chords were measured as 5" and they are 0.25" thick. The rod webs were measured as 0.9" with (2) rods at the end. The shoe depth was measured at 5".

The closest equivalent joist I could find from slideruleera's compilation was 1963 Sheffield's or 1970s PACAL's 24H8. However, these joists have shoes that are 2.5". Does anyone know if they produced them with 5" shoes?

Or/also I am wondering if anyone has any resources referencing or have encountered "HL" type hat-chord joists.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried Great West Steel sections?

They are long since out of business, but were bought out by CanAm Steel, who also may have been bought out.

I tried to upload the file, but am getting a runtime error.

I saved it to file many years ago...

I found a 1973 GWS joist catalog on http://www.slideruleera.net/contributions.html which has a 24H and would be a possibility for a 32' span. But the chord width is 4 1/8" (we measured 5"), and it states their standard designation for long span (with a 5" deep shoe)does not include any following letters or numbers, but would simply state 24H. So I ruled that out.

Is this a pre-engineered building? It might be a proprietary designation.

It is not a PEMB. The joists bear on wide flange beams and CMU bearing/shear walls. Still working with the owner on determining approximate year it was built as they are not the original owners.
