I went out an bought a copy of the 75 year SJI manual a few years ago. It's extremely frustrating that you can't really make out the span tables contained withing the CD manual.

Does anyone have the moment and shear capacity of a 24H8 joist? I think the table reads M = 716,000 in-lbs and V = 6000 lbs.

That’s exactly what my catalog says.

I'm fortunate enough to own the hardcopy, you are correct with M=716,000 in-lb and V=6000lb

Steel PE:

That's what happens when we get older and need glasses. Trouble is, I can't even read the CD with my glasses. I have to use a magnifying glass too! [shocked]

I'm 36 yo, not what I would consider old but already blind as a bat. I can't believe I bought the CD and you can hardly make out the tables. Talk about a waste of money.

I have the CD. If you use the table of contents and click on the appropriate load table, you are correct that it is fuzzy and very hard to read.

I would recommend that you use the "Hi-Res PDF". There is a link at the top of the table of contents. It opens a 542 page pdf where all the pages are crisp, clear and very readable. With this option you lose the ability to jump right to the correct load table, but at least you can read it.

I have the hard copy version and not the CD version. But for those of you with the Hi-Res pdf's, couldn't you add bookmarks for each of the load tables to make it easy to navigate? Or have they locked it down so tight that you can't do anything with it?

If you have an editing program like Acrobat or Nitro Pro and there is no password security to keep you from adding bookmarks, then you should be able to use the hi-res version.

And, just think... you paid someone $150 for a book or CD that’s too fuzzy to read, unless you spend a couple hundred dollars more for an editing program, and a number of hours learning to use that so you can make your life easier, when that was what you thought you were buying in the first place, and didn’t get. Why not send it back, get your money back, and tell them to let you know when they come out with a readable edition, one that can actually be used, without a bunch of farting around. And, next time you want to use it, I’ll bet you have to relearn to use it all over again. In a few years when you need it again, come on back to Eng-Tips. Does anyone produce a good and usable product any more or is it all just second rate, convoluted, junk. If my slide rule gave me that much trouble, I’d’a broken it over my knee year ago. Same for my good ref. texts, I can read them; if you can’t read them in fairly clear language and print, what good are they.
