2008 is slow

My company just upgraded from SW2006 to SW2008. 2008 seems to lag when dimensioning sketches and drawings. Is it just me, or have others seen this as well?

With the upgrade from 06 to 08, were the hardware and/or video drivers updated?

No, you're totally correct. (I suppose I've ranted about this enough already.) It's something others have seen at the SolidWorks forum as well, and I noticed a pronounced, pointless delay in capturing text within the dimension box when recently installing both v2008 and v2009 after using v2007 for three years. Normally I type in the dimension without needing to look at the keypad--fast. Neither of the latest two versions can keep up.

I've recently gotten more used to this ridiculous slow-down, so I don't have to hit Undo to turn a single step into three or four steps nearly as often as when I first made the switch. I've seen the same on other systems as well. My guess is that this problem isn't truly represented on ALL systems, but MY system is at better-than-minimum system requirements (scores 89-seconds in Anna's punch-holder benchmark) and this silly little delay is quite evident here. Also tried on a new, fast CAD laptop and saw the same there.

I'd suspect that many who don't work with this sort of hand-on-keyboard style wouldn't see the delay--it's often only ~0.5 seconds. It seems those who have this style and recently move from v2007 or earlier tend to complain about this bug.

I'm only committed with four projects in versions above v2007 thus far. The relatively few benefits I find from the latest versions are offset by other types of bugs, delays, or other problems such that I'm planning on evaluating v2010 before purchasing. (No point in shelling out for software to put on the shelf, eh?)

1. We can only upgrade to the level of our customers. They seem to get upset when thier files say future version when they open them:)

2. I downloaded the latest version of my video driver.

3. Here are my specs: Pentium(r) 4 cpu 3.00ghZ, 2.99ghZ 3.25 GB of RAM, Nvidia Quatro FX 3450/4000 SDI.

I have one of tha fastest computers in the company.

I have seen the same slow down as Theophilus in the dimension entry...For days it drove me crazy(er) until I slowed myself down a little.

My system is about the same setup as yours Sirbartoo and I see slowdown in startup and some aplications. Unfortunately I also had no choice in when we upgrade (keeping up with customers instead of holding back.

I have found that even though I have plenty of memory available, sometimes having too many applications open will slow you down.

It doesn't sound crazy from MY point of view!

One of these new processors with multiple cores does wonders in spreading out processes among multiple open applications. Two cores is probably the best bang for the buck when using SolidWorks (yeah, faster than four cores unless you're rendering all the time). In fact, because the clock speeds are often higher with single or dual-cores (than quad-cores), these chips are often faster with regular modeling as well.

Check Cadalyst.com for recent reviews of systems for some idea how these new chips (like the i7) perform.

We had the same problem when we "upgraded" to SW2008 from SW2007. You did not mention if you were using PDMWorks or not, but in our case it had something to do with a setting in our PDMWorks options. With the help of my VAR we were able to track down. Don't ask me what it was or exactly why it was happening. I do know however, that unselecting that setting eliminated the problem for us. If you are using PDMWorks and want to try it, the setting in question that you want to uncheck is "In ProjectManager" under the vault tab of your local PDMWorks options. It might be worth trying. Good luck.

I would say that 2008 and 2009 take forever to launch the first time. I am not sure why anyone would launch multiple times in a day unless they kept crashing. I tend launch SW before my computer has finished booting up and keep it open for the rest of the day.

I have also noticed the delay in creating the detail dimensions in drawings and sketches.

I launch and relaunch primarily because I'm running three versions (2007, 2008, and 2009), depending on the client/project--so I need to switch versions once in a while. I also do this to clear Windows' use of RAM after lots of it piles up (limited with 32-bit XP right now).

First time fire up of SW2009 = 46 secs.
Subsequent re-starts (not OS, just SW) = 6 secs.
