How do I calculate the weight of a 2:1 eliptical head if I know the wall thickness and cylinder diameter?

Surface area = 1.084 D^2 (excluding straight flange).

You look it up. Or you can integrate to find the area, but that gets messy. "Steel Plate Engineering Data" by American Iron and Steel Institute gives the 1.084 D^2 formula. Head catalogs will give the weight directly if it's a standard size head. I assume the various pressure vessel handbooks would have the area factors also.
