The AISC 13th addition table 4-4 has available strength for HSS columns with 1/8” wall thickness. I have never used less than 3/16”.
I have a situation where because of a series of clerestory windows, I need to place a short lightly loaded 3½” square column under each roof joist at 14’ on-center. I plan on connecting the tops of the columns for collector and chord forces with a C6x8.2 x continuous laid flat over the tops of the columns. Table 4-4 indicates that I am good with 1/8” which would save 50% in materials over 3/16”. Am I missing anything? This project is an SDC D and the columns are not part of the lateral force system but the channel will be a drag strut.
