We are currently working on a deck design for a steel girder bridge. We have used the typical 1/2" sacrificial wearing surface in our design on all designs. Although this seems standard for most engineers to use, we can not seem to find the actual value anywhere in the AASHTO manual. Does anyone know what the actual code number is, or are we just blind?
Thanks.

I don't recall ever seeing this in AASHTO. The sacrifical layer has been common practice for as long as I can remember. NYSDOT typically uses a 9 1/2" deck but designs for 8 1/2", 1" sacrifical layer.
